The German one is very complex compared with English/French's.
So this highlights again the need for a language-specific formatting engine. The current substitution options are really poor if you consider that OO.o allows you to set the language used by every paragraph: quotes substitution does not correspond to the rules of the select language. I know Abiword has recently included a smart quotes support that checks for the current language before choosing the character to use. Are there any plans for that? I can see broader use cases for this: in French, we'd also need to add non-break spaces before colon an the like. And non-European languages absolutely don't need smart quotes, but may benefit from other substitution rules... That's really a major feature for a text processor, now that Writer fills most fundamental requirements. On a short-term note, I wonder if it would hurt to enable the current substitution feature by default anyway? This will suit the basic needs of most latin languages I guess. Germans won't get their apostrophes completely right anyway, but at least with substitution, half of them will be good, while now none are right! ;-) Is there a strong case against it?
