We (at least Debian, can't speak of Ubuntu) don't patch anything in that area, and we use OpenJDK (which should be sufficiently compatible and doesn't "cripple" stuff for building). Using Sun JDK is no option, no. So sorry, no idea. What I *can* say, though is that not veretyhing exposed on distros is a bug *caused* by those distros.
