When you switch on a Garmin and it's making a GPX, and yesterday you were in another continent / town.... it puts the first point of the new GPX for today as the last known point from when you turned it on previously.
That's wonderful, but: Potlatch starts you at the first point on the GPX and tries hard to zoom out, so you are editing 3,000 miles from where you want to edit at too high a zoom. suggested fix: start at the last point, or the 2nd point if there is a big jump between 1 and 2, and start at a reasonable zoom level so it doesn't try loading huge amounts off the bat.
