Yes, it can take a long time. Did you tune your postgresql according to http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mapnik/PostGIS#Tuning_the_database ? An extra line in osm2pgsql, where it tells you it's doing the ANALYZE, could be handy as well.
