The NaPTAN imports of UK bus stops include a bearing field using the 8 cardinal points (N, NE, E ...). Christophe's NOVAM map ( http://is.gd/689lG ) uses this bearing to show the direction the bus sets off in from that stop on the overlay. Even though there are only 8 possible directions it still works well. Maybe bearing would help for many things that need a direction.
