Are you using tirex? It comes with a very handy tool called
"tirex-batch" which can do a lot of pre-rendering and expiring stuff
-- probably also what you want.
I also recommend tirex-batch because you can simply give it a bbox and
say "everything in that area from z0 to z10". However there's a program
included with mod_tile/renderd called "render_list" which can be used
for pre-rendering also; it can read individual tile coords from a list
but accepts an x/y tile range on the command line as well.
