Are you sure that the daemon is really running under the user tirex (chack "ps auxw" or so)? If yes, then to be absolutely sure that the permissions of everything are ok, do a "su tirex" and "touch /var/run/tirex/foo". If that works too, then you should strace the daemon startup to find out exactly why it thinks it cannot access the socket.
