Not a good Idea IMO because there is more than Mapnik and quite a lot
of the spatial operations in postgis will not work with invalid
geometries.
I agree.
One could have a flag like "--try-to-repair-broken-polygons" for users
who want that, but the osm2pgsql instance that we run at OpenStreetMap
should be dropping dodgy polygons instead of trying to get them to
render somehow.
