It's still a defect. Shift-R is there to allow you to copy relations over from another similar object. I think the likelihood of this behaviour being useful to anyone is very low - and the chance of it producing unintentional copying quite high. (Of course, if you use ShiftR to copy duplicate relations from one way to another, I guess that should work.)
