I think harfbuzz-ng (the recent re-write) is much better. It appears to only 
have one hard dependency: ragel (http://www.complang.org/ragel/). All others

uses osx and windows specific stuff for threading.

Ah right, I had just looked at configure to see what it was probing for. If it only uses GLib on Linux then that sounds promising.
