I feel it would be advantageous to do things "the Linux way" and
really support the Linux distributions' mechanisms for packaging and
distributing software.

In short, the biggest momentum and goodwill will come from having:

 (Debian) apt-get install chandler
 (Debian) apt-get install chandler-dev
 (Gentoo) emerge chandler
 (Gentoo) emerge chandler-svn
 (Fedora) yum install chandle

and so on.

The packaging should be done via a liaison program with volunteer
packagers representing the various distributions (jumpstarted if
necessary with in-house packaging). Leave it those people to arrive
at specific dependency trees specific to their distribution, and
create distribution-specific patches as necessary to support a
high-quality build on their platform.

Packagers also typically form a core base of open-source contributors;
they come to know the package intimately, and often provide functional
patches for their distribution that they feed "upstream" back to OSAF.

Building binary distributions is great, but very challenging to
support in a dynamic Linux environment. If you pick an official set,
you'll always get flak from people outside those distributions, will
always be playing catchup with changing distributions, and will have
lower market penetration numbers than if the package is simply
provided using binary-only distributions.

Simply providing "how to build Chandler on Linux" instructions is not
sufficient going forward. Real adoption will come from being able to
run apt-get/emerge/yum/etc making it a no-hassle install for lots of
people all at once.

If desired, I can discuss my personal opinions about which specific
Linux distributions have the most momentum and which would form a
reasonable set for binary distributions, though the point of my
thoughts above is orthogonal to that issue.
