Rather interesting to focus on Java when the core of Chandler is Python...
chandler and the server projects are totally unrelated from an implementation perspective except that they share certain ecosystem-wide features and speak well-known protocols to each other.
python was certainly a possibility for cosmo and scooby, but we chose to use java instead. why? because java is what i'm good at, and i'm in charge of the server projects ;)
seriously tho, the same reasons anybody chooses to write a web application or network server in java are the ones that led us to it. mature server development platform, lots of available developers, previous team experience, etc. i can go into more detail if you'd like, but i'm not interested in getting into point-by-point language comparisons.
