actually, what morgen's describing is usually (always?) caused by
cosmo not being able to create any new files or directories inside
a directory in the data store. that particular bug has been fixed.
but morgen's right, there have been a few "out of memory" errors
noted in the cosmo log, and we're still not sure what's causing
them or how to reproduce them.
Actually there is a simple way to reproduce the "out of memory"
