The only projects that I am aware of that use milestones are Eclipse
and Mozilla. The Eclipse folks use a number scheme similar to the one
being proposed (see <http://eclipse.org/downloads/>). They also use a
datestamped nightly build. I wasn't able to find any milestone
builds off of Mozilla.org at all, but I did find the nightlies
<http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/>.
I agree: coming from Mozilla and Eclipse worlds, I found the backwards
numbering of milestones very confusing. Also, I thought the micro
version numbers are quite widely used to denote bugfix releases. So
personally, FWIW, I'm +1 on the proposed scheme.
Then there is the whole issue of odd vs. even minor version numbers to
denote experimental vs. stable releases, but that's really a post-1.0
issue. :-)
