But I don't know about refresh() - Andi, is refresh() a time-consuming operation if lots of data is coming in from other views? Or if the incoming data doesn't conflict with the current view, maybe this is a cheap operation?
refresh is usually a lot cheaper than commit(). A situation where it may become more expensive is when there is a lot of merging going on, hopefully something rather rare.
