Just a quick note here - while gcj -V 2.4 -v _seems_ to work, if you look closely, you'll notice that java is not included:

I just asked the Ubuntu gcc packager for his opinion, and he replied "should be possible to just rebuild it with some magic changed in debian/rules.defs" As an end-result, you'd end up with a gcj 3.4 deb that you can get people to install.
