I tried again today... I was able to fix the existing code by making four
different changes.
However I noticed that one "O" from another file (the one from PDFBOX-940,
third page, "Oobian") looks like it was beaten up. A test with a "clean"
version shows the same problem, a test with the Sun rendering doesn't. I will
look into it if I have the time. I suspect that a reason could be that quadto()
is sometimes called with interpolated values, while Sun always calls quad()
with values from the array.
