An alternative to a branch can be a github fork. Just fork the pdfbox and do your
changes. You can always merge from the "upstream" (the original project) and
use up to date classes. After all you can create a pull request to create a patch with
the change set.

Hmmm, I don't want to start a svn vs git discussion, but as long as we
are using svn, I'd prefer a branch in svn. I'm handling different PDFBox
versions on my box and I don't know if I'd like to setup yet another mutation
just because of a second VCS.
