Andreas Meier commented on PDFBOX-2998:
---------------------------------------
I would neither call it "line finding" nor "proper text to line matching",
since this problem is not about single lines.
It is more about finding a block of characters, which belong together and build
up a text.
{quote}
Given that in a PDF we already know where the text is, there's not much
advantage to be had by implementing a more sophisticated line finding algorithm
{quote}
Depends, whether pdfbox shall be able to extract text in the correct order or
if it shall just extract any text.
In view of the problem Maruan Sahyoun mentioned:
We could try to implement a simple algorithm, finding most of the lines
ourself, but this might only address one special case.
A general approach might be more useful.
> Enhance the text extraction capabilities

> Issue Type: Improvement
> Components: Text extraction
> Affects Versions: 2.0.0

>
> PDFBox will need some -document layout analysis tools- enhancement to the
> current text extraction to extract text correctly.
> At the Moment the text of a document is extracted using the position of
> single characters.
> This may lead to wrong results, due to the format of the file.
> There are good tools such as https://code.google.com/p/lapdftext which we
> could use to compare our current output.
> Possible enhancements are
> - enhance matching of text to a certain line i.e. don't mix up text from
> different lines
> - better handling of rotated text
> - handling of vertical text
> - ability to get additional text properties such as font, font size ...
> Some of these are already logged as individual tickets
