That occurred when I was adding the ability to use the embedded font's widths
in cases where W and/or DW are missing. I can see a couple of potential issues;
added as comments:

Float w = widths.get(cid);
if (w != null) // can w actually be null?

return w;
}
else
{
return getDefaultWidth();

return getWidthFromFont(code); // we forgot to check DW before falling back
