Maybe use a real font (if you created the PDF). Your PDF used a type 3 font, 
these are rendered like ordinary PDF content streams (and are slow).

A really bad example is a glyph that looks like a T but with two extra 
horizontal lines.

Btw I looked also at one of our java competitors, they have the same problem.
