Most likely it is a problem that has been solved with the 2.0 version - this is
similar to PDFBOX-3205 where you were told "the real cause is a problem with
fonts that was solved in 2.0 but not in 1.8". Download the 2.0 command line app
and run PDFToImage on your file.
