It looks like we've found the reason for the issue: the mapped symbol font on 
windows doesn't provide the € character. 

As the pdf spec defines the € character as valid for the symbol font we have to 
find another font for the mapping. 
Any ideas? I'm going to check the font used on linux, maybe the license is 
suitable ..
