"how to" questions are really for the user mailing list or for stackoverflow. I 
should not even respond here :-)

preflight isn't what you want, that is for PDF/A checking.

Your original strategy (other issue) is ok, if you also take the images into 
consideration.

Alternatively, convert the PDFs to images (see sample code in stackoverflow), 
and then evaluate what colors are in the images.
