I want to say: Thank you!
I updated my pdfbox checkout to HEAD and rendered the poster that triggered my
initial interest again. After the latest changes the whole scene is rendered
correctly. There are multiple layered images with masked, that in the past were
rendered with wrongly shaped masked or not at all. No the whole poster comes
out as I'd expect.
