What about using the text only in a font similar to the one used in
[^pdfbox_logo_001.pdf]. Immediately gives it a more modern look. Later on we
can decide if we need a graphic too (I'd prefer to have one but this is a more
difficult topic).

Wouldn't go that route as this affects readability and can't be used as an
.ico. It reflects the Apache brand which we'd be more flexible by using the
text only. So we can have PDFBox, Apache PDFBox, a graphic or all together.
