Ah, that should have been "use case".
I mean the use case in which
* the pdf with an empty signature field is generated by some software (e.g. by
Adobe) including Adobe style appearance XObjects with a non-empty background in
*n0*;
* the signature field then is signed by pdfbox, adding a foreground in a *n2*
layer but keeping the original *n0* background as is, shining through where the
foreground is transparent; and
* (optionally) the signature field may be "unsigned" again by either pdfbox or
some other software (e.g. by Adobe) by removing the signature value and the
*n2* layer but keeping the *n0* layer, the field looking again like before the
signing step.
Support for that combined use case using different pdf processors might be what
Adobe calls a "consistent user experience".
