I played a bit this just to see what happens. I was able to get ligatures with
the FiraCode font, but not with the DejaVu font. I tried the FiraCode font
because it uses GSUB table types that we don't support. OTOH the DejaVu font
has tables that we do support and we do get ligatures with the existing code.
That makes me wonder if the existing GSUB handling and your PR somehow
interfere with each other.
