Thanks for you advice [~maryannxue], I will keep that in mind.
Based on the discussion, I think the whole roadmap may like this:
1. Supporting UNION in the master branch following the roadmap mentioned in the
previous comments. In this stage, I can reference [PHOENIX-1580 |
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/PHOENIX-1580].
2. Adding support for UNION in subqueries. In this stage,
[https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/PHOENIX-1807] is a good reference.
3. Implement PhoenixUnion on the calcite branch, which is similar to this JIRA
[PHOENIX-2192 | https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/PHOENIX-2192] and the

4. Add rules to push down sort through Union. I can follow this JIRA
[PHOENIX-2193|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/PHOENIX-2193] and the

I'm not sure whether this step is necessary or not. Perhaps, I should reuse
the previous code directly.
I need take care of
[PHOENIX-2658|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/PHOENIX-2658] and
[PHOENIX-2295|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/PHOENIX-2295] to avoid the
exceptions mentioned in those JIRAs being thrown again.
[~jamestaylor] and [~maryannxue]. Would you mind giving me any suggestions?
By the way, I notice that this JIRA
[PHOENIX-1871|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/PHOENIX-1871] is still
opening. Would you mind explaining it to me a bit more. Probably, I can
resolve it in this GSoC term.
