James Taylor commented on PHOENIX-4007:

bq. In this patch I have removed the init method altogether and just calling
initGuidePostDepth once in the constructor of DefaultStatisticsCollector
The problem with that is that we want to do as much of the stats work as
possible asynchronously. The init method is called by the asynchronous thread.
The constructor of DefaultStatisticsCollector is not. Let's keep the init
method as it was and ideally delay the construction of StatisticsWriter until
the initGuidePostDepth method is called.

> As part of PHOENIX-3822, we surfaced byte and row estimates for queries in
> explain plan. Since we collect this information through stats collection, it
> would also be helpful to surface when this information was last updated to
> reflect its freshness. We already store last_stats_update_time in
> SYSTEM.STATS. So the task would be essentially surfacing
> last_stats_update_time as another column in the explain plan result set.
