I think a vote eventually will be fine; everyone I know who uses Pig has wanted
an update since they started reading Pig documentation :)
I'd also like to mention I like Julien's idea as well, but I think there's more
strength in what Justin has posted, with a cartoony pig character alongside the
stylized word "PIG".
That format is in line as I mentioned with Hadoop (
http://hadoop.apache.org/images/hadoop-logo.jpg ), Hive (
http://hive.apache.org/images/hive_logo_medium.jpg ), and Mahout (
http://mahout.apache.org/images/mantle-mahout.png ), and keeps the "pig"
cartoon as the mascot but freshens him up.
I'm not sure I see the point of a vote at this stage without discussing the
specific merits of each direction. I think we should consider the options in
the larger context of being a Hadoop-based project, and talk through what that
means. Obviously I personally think we should develop what Justin's posted,
offer suggestions or style points, and then have a vote for the wider community
on those options.
But eventually; I don't think we'd be ready to vote any time soon. Pig's been
around for years whereas I just opened this bug two weeks ago. Let's take our
time and get a good result.
