Adam - What you're saying is of course true. But since "MaxTupleBy1stField" 
exists for backwards compatibility/convenience, and some people 
(must)(probably?) use it, I think it's worth it to add the Accumulator 
implementation and speed things up for such cases.

Another option might be to make MaxTupleBy1stField use ExtremalTupleByNthField 
instead of having its own implementation.
