I just came here but let me give my 5 cents. As far as I understand, the lower the JDK the bigger the user base. More users mean a better library (more user feedback, more contribs, etc). In addition, many automation stuff runs on old "certified" machines where updating the system JDK may be not available. Thus, even though I love the idea of setting 11 or 17 as a minimum, I may recommend defining grandma 1.8 as a minimum requirement.
