What involvement might we wish to have in this?

I'm not sure, it'll be interesting to see what licence, language and structure they go for. If it's something suitable, we could certainly offer to help out

The thing that I found most interesting in the blog post was:
"Nevertheless, in response to requests for even easier access to the
Binary Formats, Microsoft has agreed to remove any intermediate steps
necessary to get the documentation, and will post it and make it
directly available for a direct download on the Microsoft web site.
Microsoft will also make the Binary Formats subject to its Open
Specification Promise (see www.microsoft.com/interop/osp) by February
  15, 2008."

So it looks like from next month, we'll be able to get some up-to-date specs for xls, and some decent specs for doc and ppt, all under a licence we can use. Should hopefully allow us to enhance our support
