I'm able to open the file with HSSFWorkbook, serialise it to bytes, and open that again, all without issue. (see src/testcases/org/apache/poi/hssf/usermodel/TestBugs.java#test42564) So, I believe this bug is fixed in 3.0.2, but it certainly appears to be fixed in svn trunk.
