The patch was done in svn r529196 due to bug 41223.
There is an existing junit that fails with OOME when this patch is rolled back:
TestHSSFSheet.testGroupRowsExisting()
This was not part of the patch for that bug.
I modified that junit to annotate this bug's failure (svn r659462).
