Its not supported by POI-HWPF. Depending on how complex the formatting is, you may have a chance to copy content "one item by one", where item may be a paragraph or character run. If you need to copy tables, fields, bookmarks or similar things, you will need to go into lower level data structures (which are indeed horrible).
