Hmm, no, it does:
unzip -l poi-3.1-FINAL.jar | grep HSSFPatriarch
5360 06-29-08 16:43 org/apache/poi/hssf/usermodel/HSSFPatriarch.class
I'd check you really have the version of poi on your classpath you think
