I have no idea if this will work but an wondering if it could be a simple matter of POI being slightly more pedantic than Excel. Have you tried entering SUM(sheet1!A1:sheet35!A1) to see if that will work; it may simply be that POI is expecting to see a sheet followed by a cell reference on both sides of the colon operator. As I said, I cannot say that this will work but it will be easy enough to test.
