The simplest failing test case is: XSSFWorkbook targetWorkbook = new XSSFWorkbook(new FileInputStream("balance.xlsx")); XSSFCellStyle style = targetWorkbook.createCellStyle(); Somehow appending a new cell style to balance.xlsx results in exception.
