I could well be wrong but I do not think that you can do this in Excel. Just now, I opened a workbook, navigated to a sheet, right clicked on a cell and selected 'Name a Range' from the menu that opened up. If I tried to create range by entering this - =Sheet1!$G - into the refers to box and then selecting OK, Excel raises an error. I have not completed any research but suspect that the error means you cannot do this and that you must specify the bounds of the range. Suggest you go onto an Excel forum and ask there how to create a range that applies to a complete column. If it is possible, and once you have the correct syntax, then it might be possible to replicate the operation using POI.
