I have done such tasks during last week:
1. Now POI works with drawing layer using only new model.
2. Fixed many bugs in new model and added new tests.
3. Checked such examples and compared with POI 3.8:
OfficeDrawing
OfficeDrawingWithGraphics
AddDimensionedImage
CellComments
4. Added tests for each new improvement.
5. Added enhancement for setting text inside simple shapes.
6. Applied some improvements from patch:

Here is my plan for next week:
1. Add API for removing shapes.
2. Check bugzilla reports from my GSoC application.
3. Work with filters.
4. Work with cloning of shapes inside sheet.
