It might be best if you took a branch off of trunk, and worked on the WMF support on there. That way, we can all see the code + offer advice on it, but it won't risk stability issues on the final release, and won't accidently end up with you locked into an API pattern you weren't finished with!
and regarding the release management .... "look there is a three-headed-monkey!" ;) ...ok seriously, after reading [1] I hope one of the veterans will do it ...
