I've implemented exactly the same patch (apart of the checks in XMLSlideShow ...) and was just before committing it ... I think, the duplicated relations (but with different parent/ref-id) should be handled through some kind of proxy or delegate, so when the part is called from the outside, it will behave (i.e. return its ref-ids) like it would belong to the embracing part ...
