You are correct. Per the Excel Named Range docs [1]:

> Spaces are not allowed as part of a name. Use the underscore character (_) 
> and period (.) as word separators, such as, Sales_Tax or First.Quarter.

I broke this in r1749305 when trying to restrict named ranges in bug 56781
