The problem is that textBox.getTextParagraphs().remove(...) does not remove the underlying XMLBeans data (CTTextParagraph class). If you want to work around the issue without my change, you can get the CTTextBody for the XSLFTextBox using textBox.getTextBody().getXmlObject().
