Thanks for the detailed description.
I have to say some things.
Excel is our focus. If another app behaves differently, then tell them.
We get a fair few reports like this where one person wants us to change code
that has been in place for years. Accepting one person's word and making the
change has so often led to us breaking use cases for other users.
I agree that a get method modifying the data is not ideal but it has been like
this for a while.
POI is a 20 year old volunteer project that is a long way past its peak level
of community participation.
We have basically reached a point where if you want a change then you provide a
PR.
I will vote against any change that changes the default here. If you provide a
PR that lets users opt in to using your change then that is acceptable to me.
