I would be -1 on adding a dependency on a 3rd party lib. We want to keep the dependencies lean. There are too many already. POI supports adding bold and italic text, it just means adding a few text runs, each with their own formatting. This enhancement could be done as a standalone lib acting as a wrapper for the lower level POI APIs. POI is also a volunteer project that is not very active.
