Thank you very much to report this problem : some days ago, I had exactly the same, but just forgot to report it ( sorry).
If a solution exists, I'm very interested too. For now I only can build without Java.

What is the complete list of modules you download ? When I try for the first time, I wasn't sure hsqldb2 cws code was complete.

What's wrong with me?
Same thing for me : hsqldb2 won't build neither. I have tried by hand to build hsqldb.jar with j2sdk1.3.1 from Kevin hendricks, with a lot of "ant -options" , but every time, it doesn't work.
is it specific to my environment?
No, I don't think so. From my side, I'm waiting for gcj-4.0 in Debian experimental, actually broken.
