Ok. I have just verified, installing all french dictionnaries I have found.
No error where reported.

However, after re-starting OOo (as
directed) there was no sign of the spell checker- no ABC icon next to
the language name under tool--preferences.
Does what follows work for you ?
Tools -> Options -> Language Settings -> Writing Aids
Choose available languages modules -> Edit
And choose everything you need
Click on OK to save your changes
Restart OpenOffice.org2.0
And ?
